Providing care for a loved one who is ill can be stressful, regardless of whether that loved one has 2 legs or 4! Research from our lab consistently shows that stress, lower quality of life, and even symptoms of anxiety and depression can be present when acting as a caregiver. Rearranging your work or family schedule, following complicated treatment regimens, and making changes in the home to accommodate illness in a pet can be a lot! The extra stress sometimes comes with an emotional price tag: feeling frustrated, strained, or guilty.

Work from our lab has long shown that these experiences are very real for pet caregivers. Getting the word out to veterinary healthcare teams is important, to make sure they have a good understanding of the client’s experience.

Interested in learning more about this topic? This paper provides an overview of pet caregiver distress as well as information to help the veterinary healthcare providers better support overwhelmed caregivers. This review paper was published in Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice, and we have been given permission to share it with you for free for the next month!

Until February 11, 2026, you can access the paper here: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cvsm.2025.10.002.

After that date, for access to the paper, please request it through our contact page.

A veterinary team that can identify when a client is distressed is key to alleviating the burden!
